Back to the Front

This morning I could not find my jar of organic, cold pressed coconut oil—an essential component of my morning coffee ritual. It wasn’t front and center on the pantry cupboard shelf as per usual. It wasn’t on the countertop nor was it in any other cupboard. Not in the fridge, not even in the microwave. I checked.

After a perplexing search it turns out the coconut oil was still on its usual shelf but had been pushed to the back without my realizing it. A new interest of mine—a developing jar of sourdough starter—had taken its place of prominence. And next to the starter was a recently acquired humidity sensor because it makes sense to be aware of your pantry’s moisture level, right? Not often do I converse with my condiments but the instant I saw that recognizable jar I audibly exclaimed, “Ohhh, you were pushed to the back!”

The important stuff of life is usually in the front. Top of mind, front and center as it were, but occasionally the hierarchy of our passions and pleasures and things we truly care about will experience an ebb and flow of prioritization. The areas of our focused attention may gently (or dramatically) shift from time to time. That’s only natural. No harm, no foul. Seasons change. A moment of reflection, a little soul-searching, may help us relocate that which had previously given us fulfillment, energy, and joy.

It just may be that a particular interest or ability of ours is residing in the back of the cupboard, waiting to be rediscovered. Maybe its time to bring it back to the front. ❤️
